Preliminary Task Example
All Year 12 AS students... here is an example of the preliminary exercise which you must complete as part of your coursework. This piece of work must demonstrate your knowledge of the 180 degree rule, match on action, and shot/reverse shot.
Remember, whilst you will not receive any marks for this activity... you will have 15 marks deducted (1/4 gulp!) from your construction marks awarded if you fail to complete this task.
180-degree rule
Here is an excellent diagram to illustrate the 180 degree rule. All of your different camera angles must remain on the same side of the 180 degree line. For example if you watch the edit pattern for the football highlights on Match of the Day, you will notice how all the cameras for the continuous action are placed on one side of the football ground. In this example the touchline becomes the 180 degree line. If we saw the action from a camera set on the other side of the football ground, it would appear to the viewer that the footballers are confused as to which way they are attacking!
Only for replays and slow-motion will the director cut to shot from a reverse angle.
